Esther is unlike any other book in the Bible—there is not direct mention of God. Although God is not named, his providence is clearly seen. The fast-moving historical narrative is full of drama, intrigue, and mystery. Esther, the book’s heroin, is questioned by her wise uncle and called to action with words that make for the key verse, “For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (4:16).
